90 years of work and Successes

90 years ago, on September 20 1933, the Żejtun Band Club was officially registered. Back then this would be done with the police. This association is led by the descendants of the first villages committee of the Workers' Party which was founded in Żejtun in 1922 and also of the Żejtun Jazz Band founded in 1928. Eventually, at the beginning of 1930, the Jazz Band transformed itself into a band that played for the first time in Cine Carabott in Żejtun, on Easter which fell on 20 April 1930. However, the official foundation date is considered the one when the Association was registered in 1933.

Over time, the Żejtun Band continued to grow and broaden its musical participation in the life of Żejtun, especially in the feast of Saint Catherine, in the Good Friday procession and also in other towns and villages.

The successes the Band Club achieved were numerous, such as, winning the National Competition of Maltese Bands in December 1986 with a concert held at the Teatru Manoel, at Malta Carnival when it set a national record of consecutive wins, with grotesque marches, floats, and a merry band. There are also several musical programs worth mentioning together with the recent tour in Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, where it performed a musical program in the Cathedral of Santa Katarina and a musical program on the occasion of the opening of the Maltese Embassy in Egypt.

Over the years, the determination of the management committees also led the Association to grow the band club and gain ownership of the Pandora theatre which for many years was also used as a cinema.

These memories in the chain of successes will be remembered in this celebratory concert which also includes features. The Żejtun Band will be under the direction of its Master Director Mro David Agius A.(Mus.) L.C.M., A.(MUS) V.C.M. (Hons.) A.L.C.M. In this commemorative a number of works by Maltese composers such as Onorato Gauci, Ray Zammit, Antoine Mercieca, John J Pace and David Agius, will be performed for the first time. It also includes excerpts from various foreign composers such as Bizet, Longfield, Holst, Shostakovic and Dostal.
